What’s cracking guys and gals?! I love visiting old friends that have such amazing success stories. There is always a few hours available each day to soak up the knowledge from my friends (mentors) or acquaintances. They all offer so much value and insight on things i am trying to figure out. They all come from a different walks of life. They hail from the silver spoon fed families to once living in their car bagabons. Each one special in their own way. I have had the opportunity to meet them on the jobsite, in the field, and hang out in the board room and take in all the knowledge first hand from these titans of the business world.
I spent my youth chasing my dreams. Ok.. I may have exaggerated that just a bit. I didn’t have any dreams to chase. I was chasing girls and partying with my friends. Yes, I was an average teen looking for trouble. I had my fair amount of jobs, barely graduated high school and always knew i was different though. Nothing really interested me except turning a buck on something i could sell or creating a solution to a problem i found with something. I always thought business was a lot more interesting than algebra or history. Now all that is very interesting and i am always trying to learn as much about everything i can. With the online self development gurus a dime a dozen you have to be careful with who you chose to pay for extended self education. There are some that are professional carnivores looking for fresh young meat to take advantage of. If they say they can make you a millionaire in a year they are blowing smoke and looking to feast on your bank account. Then you have guys that are as right as rain and create so much value that you feel like you should be paying them more just to be in their presence. Each and every person you look up to is a lesson to take away as much of the desired information you yearn for. I have had a ton of great one’s i have run across and a couple i’m still waiting for the refund. Doubt i’ll get it but hey valuable lessons don’t come cheap.
I would like to talk about a couple jobs that actually led me into my eyes being opened to the world of entrepreneurship. The business owners themselves will tell you that if you are afraid everyday then you are on the right path to success. If you are afraid everyday that you will and can go back to broke if you don’t hustle and work your ass off. There is no easy road to becoming a millionaire and you should understand that failure is not an option. It is a necessity! You must fail if you ever want to grow. You will learn far more from failing and taking a risk than playing it safe and thinking too small.
I met this gentleman one day when i was working at speaking seminar. No, I was not in it. I was the guy getting all the speakers whatever they wanted and it was my first real job. I was the goffer. Man am i glad i was at this one on this particular day though. I was getting cases of water setup on the table behind the stage and trying to figure out who these ” special guest” speakers where. I was walking around and listening to all these people running around with cameras and their phones taking pictures and posting everything on social media. It was like a tornado of people. So it peaked my curiosity and i wanted to see what was going on. I never thought too much about being super successful and setting goals and all that jazz or should I say extra effort with no guarantee of a payday. So i thought.
When i walked over to the group of highly energetic people there was a guy wearing a nice blazer and shades that had just came into the area from the back door. I thought hey i’m going to see what he does and maybe i’ll learn something today worth something. After all the speaking engagement was about self betterment. So i walked over to the salt and peppered hair colored man and I said, excuse me are you going to be speaking today? He looked at me and said – son, I am the main speaker for this event. Hi, I am Grant Cardone. Now let’s pause here for a second. If I knew now what I knew then i would have asked him for a job and probably shave 4 years off my entrepreneurial journey. He was talking to so many people and was a really nice person you could tell. He didn’t have to stop and talk to the “water boy.” So after I had listened to the whole show i was like why in the hell have i been in a fog for this long and not realized it. I was in a whole new world and wasn’t going back to the old ways.
I was able to shake Mr. Cardone’s hand after in the lobby to thank him where everyone was meeting and greeting. I asked him, what is the first step in becoming like you? He said,” son all you have to do is set a goal of what kind of life you want and do 10 X what the average person would do to get it and you will have success.” That has stuck with me ever since. It was a life altering experience listening to a guy tell me and the crowd ho we have been told a lie about how the middle class is the place to be. What a joke. I set out on that day to work on getting out of the middle class as fast as possible and start creating more income.
So that day was the day i realized that there was not going to be any success fairies come and drop success on my head and magically be successful. I have been on a journey to become the best version of myself as I can possibly be. So my mission now is to find a new job to create more income and start “saving to invest” not “saving to save” as Mr. Cardone phrased it. Was he ever right. The hunt was on in the classifieds and wherever else i could get my eyes on to see who was hiring and how many jobs i could fit in my schedule to get my money right.
So two months have gone by at this point and i was going to interviews in Dallas, Tx where I lived and worked at the time. After my shift at current job i was going to interviews every single day sometimes two to three times a day. I was like a hungry dog on the back of a meat truck. I was on a mission to see who had my money. I was actually in between shifts at a one of my jobs at hertz rental car and i was grabbing a starbucks to keep me going on this mission of exhausting research. I was reading a post that Mr. Cardone had put up on his site witnation.com
I had run across his sales program and articles and it really opened my eyes. I was like, I am a salesman. We all are!! Like Grant says. Now i have gone through every article and every video on his site that had anything to do with sales. I am like, damn, I wish i would have found this sooner! Sales is probably the single most important skill to have in business and entrepreneurship. I have go to find me a sales job now. The fire was lit and i was like a kid in a candy store when on his material. I consumed everything i could, bought all his books, and some from other great sales gurus. But none compared to Grants material.
Hope this has helped you as much as it has me.
